Today we're going to talk about a really cool sewing machine accessory. It's called a sewing machine overcast presser foot.

What Does an Overcast Presser Foot do?

The overcast presser foot will give you similar results that you would get from a serger. It produces a stitch that wraps around the edge of the fabric. This secures the edges and prevents unravelling. It provides professional results, while not having to buy a new machine.

How is the Overcast Presser Foot Made?

The overcast foot can also be known as an overedge foot. The style of the foot may vary slightly, but they essentially work the same way. This foot has a little bar or bridge within the stitching area, which allows more thread into the stitch. The needle will go back and forth - over the bridge. Also, there is an extension that comes off the front of the foot. This is a guide for your fabric.

Once you select the proper stitch on your machine, when the needle swings right, it will be positioned just off the edge of the fabric and when the needle swings left, it will be on the left side of the bridge. This secures the raw edge of your fabric.

What Sewing Machines Can Use an Overcast Foot?

Most machines, from basic to advanced, have the ability to use an overcast foot unless your machine is a straight stitch machine. This is because, with a straight stitch machine, the needle cannot move back and forth over the bridge to form the overcast stitch.

This is what an overedge stitch option could look like on a basic mechanical machine.

The picture below shows how it could be displayed on an advanced, computerized machine. See how they look similar? You can also use a zig-zag stitch or a multi-zig zag stitch when using the overcast foot. Make sure to double-check your manual so that you select the proper stitch and settings.

What are Some Overcast Stitches?

My manual describes several different overcast stitches, depending on the fabric I am using. I selected a couple to show you. The first one I chose is the Overlock Stitch. According to my manual, this stitch is used to finish the edge of the fabric in a way similar to a commercial overlocking machine. First, install the overcast foot. Slowly, rotate your handwheel towards you to make sure that the needle will not hit the bar or the overcast foot. A broken needle is a bad deal! Now that you have made sure the stitch setting is correct and you know that you will not hit the foot, you can begin using this fantastic presser foot.

Another great stitch that can be achieved with the overcast foot is a Knit Stitch. This stitch is recommended when sewing on knit fabric. It provides elasticity and strength.

I highly suggest exploring the different stitches that you can do with this great overcast presser foot. You will find that it can really make your projects look more professional. As with many presser feet, you can utilize this overcast foot to produce other neat results, such as Fringe or even the look of a Rolled Hem that you would get from a serger! Make sure to check out our other Overcast Foot video for more ideas. I included a link for that video in the above video.

Until next time, Happy Sewing, everybody!
